Neurosurgery, which includes surgery on the brain, spinal cordand the bony spinal column, is a highly advanced super-specialty which requires specialized training. With technology becoming an important pillar in most areas of healthcare, tremendous strides have been made in the care provided to neuro patients. Mediversal Hospital aims to be the leader in the state-of-the-arttreatment of neurosurgical and neurological diseases in Eastern India. Brain TumorSurgery (including skull base):

Tumors of the brain are complex diseases requiring multi-department co-ordination and intervention. Lesions involving the base of skull are even difficult neurosurgical diseases. We have a Tumor Board, comprising of a Neurosurgeon, Neurologist, Neuroradiologist and Anesthetist, which discusses individual patient treatment planning and execution. These tumors require complex surgical procedures which can be performed safely with experience and latest cutting edge technology. With a vision to bring advanced neurosurgical care to Bihar, Mediversal Institute of Neurosciences is equipped with an advanced neurosurgical microscope (with intraoperative fluoresence), intraoperative neuro-monitoring and the latest neuronavigation system (Medtronic S8) in the world. All the facilities required for the managing these diseases are available in the department.

Trauma Services:

We provide round the clock trauma services to patients suffering from brain and spine injuries. We understand the extreme importance of time in trauma patients and follow standard international guidelines to urgently manage such patients. The casualty services have a trauma ICU with 14 ventilators managed by trained Critical Care specialists.

Cerebro-vascular Surgery:

Surgical management of aneurysm’s, AVM’s and Moya Moya disease are performed with precision and safety with the use of a high end neurosurgical microscope. The microscope is equipped with fluorescence technology (only hospital in Bihar) which helps in making the surgery safer. High dependency care is provided to this group of critically ill patients both in the preoperative and postoperative periods.


In keeping with thevision to bring advanced neurosurgical care to Bihar,we have a dedicated neuro-cath lab which offers endovascular intervention for disease such as aneurysm, AVM and stroke.

Spine surgery:

Advanced spinal surgery including minimally invasive spine surgery (surgery with very small incisions), endoscopic spine surgery, spinal cord tumors, complex instrumentation and complex cranio-vertebral junction anomalies are performed.


Endoscopic surgeries are routinely perfomed for several intracranial diseases including pituitary adenomas, anterior skull base lesions, third ventricular lesions, hydrocephalus.

Pediatric Neurosurgery:

(For anomalies and tumors of the brain and spinal cord in infants and children)For children born with anomalies of the brain, spinal cord, skull deformities and spinal deformities, we offer the best care, in the form of programmable shunts for hydrocephalus, repair of meningo-myeloceles, correction of cranio-synostosis (early, abnormal closure of skull bones) and correction of spinal deformities. Children with tumors of the brain and spine are also treated.

Epilepsy surgery:

A comprehensive program is offered to drug resistant epilepsy patients. Patients are evaluated by the Neurologist and selected for surgical management. The entire range of epilepsy surgeries from invasive monitoring to multilobar resections and hemipsherotomies are performed.

Peripheral nerve surgeries:

Traumatic injuries to peripheral nerves and brachial plexus and tumour involving the peripheral nerves are treated.

Movement Disorder surgery:

Selected patients suffering from diseases like Parkinson’s disease are benefited from surgical management. The surgical management includes placement of implants for Deep Brain Stimulation or by lesioning of specific structures.

Micro Neurosurgery

(Surgery performed using an operating microscope) Neurosurgery often involves reaching into complex areas of the brain, the skull base, or the spinal cord. The objective of Neurosurgery is to treat the disease with millimetre precision while keeping the delicate functions of the brain intact, thereby achieving good surgical outcome. This can be done by combining the latest microscopic surgical techniques with the most advanced and up-to-date technical resources. This allows us to reach the surgical target safely while keeping the risk at a minimum.

Micro neurosurgery is a term used to refer to the operating microscope and specific micro-instruments which are deployed to perform a surgery for treating the diseases of brain, spine, and spinal cord. Neurosurgeons are nowadays very adept in Microsurgery and perform several complex delicate operations using the Microscope. The centers for Neurosurgery at Mediversal Hospital offer the best in micro neurosurgery. Almost all procedures in brain and spine are done under the magnification provided by the high end neurosurgical microscope. With the use of a microscope, there is less damage to a normal brain or spinal cord surrounding the area of abnormality. Patients have a smooth recovery and lower incidence of surgery induced deficits. The hospital stay is reduced and thus the cost of treatment is lower.

Neuro Navigation

Neuro-Navigation, also termed frameless stereotactic surgery, is the ability to perform real-time intra-operative guidance during brain and/or spinal surgery. This ability increases the accuracy and safety in neurosurgery. Indeed such technology is becoming a standard in neurosurgery. At Apollo hospitals, we use Brain Lab Frameless neuro navigation Systems. Such technology is able to guide the surgeon to the surgical targets without the use of external frames. The stereotactic or localization aspect of this technology is based on external or surface fiducials and internal or anatomical landmarks.

The major role of frameless systems or Neuro-navigation in neurosurgery is in brain surgery. Such localization can limit the size of the skull opening or craniotomy and safely remove intra-axial lesions like brain tumors. Thus, the frameless stereotactic systems have been used primarily for tumor resection. Such systems are especially useful in accurately localizing, and then resecting tumors near important areas of the brain such as the motor strip.
